Fix: Slack “Direct Message” disappearing after Restart

When a Direct Message (DM) conversation vanishes from your Slack sidebar after restarting the desktop app, your message history has not been deleted. Slack’s client-side interface automatically hides inactive DM threads to reduce clutter whenever there are no unread messages or active drafts. The conversation and its full history remain safely stored on Slack’s servers; the client has simply closed the sidebar shortcut.

Fast Fix

Press Ctrl + K (Windows) or Cmd + K (Mac) to open the Quick Switcher, type the person’s name, and press Enter to restore the conversation to your screen. To keep the DM permanently visible in your sidebar across restarts, right-click their name in the Direct Messages list and select Move conversation > Starred or assign it to a custom sidebar section.

Diagnostic Snapshot

  • Symptom: A DM thread disappears from the left sidebar after quitting, updating, or restarting Slack.
  • Data Integrity: No data is lost; message logs remain intact on Slack cloud infrastructure.
  • Root Causes: Automated sidebar pruning of inactive threads, “Unread messages only” filter settings, empty draft clearing, or local client storage desynchronization.
  • Scope: Local user client interface only.

Diagnostic Path: Why Did the Conversation Disappear?

Follow this workflow to determine whether the disappearance is normal client pruning, a configuration setting, or local cache corruption:

1. Slack’s Sidebar Cleanup Rule

By default, Slack’s sidebar acts as a recent activity feed rather than a static contact list. If you open a DM with a colleague, read all messages, and take no further action, Slack considers the task complete. When the application restarts or reaches its recent-item display threshold, it hides inactive conversations that have no unread notifications.

2. Discarded Empty Drafts

If you clicked a colleague’s name, typed a few words into the message box, and closed Slack without sending it, Slack temporarily held that conversation open as an active draft. If an update or restart cleared temporary draft buffers, the empty conversation is pruned from the sidebar list.

3. Sidebar Filtering Preferences

If your sidebar is configured to show “Unreads only,” every channel and DM with zero pending notifications is hidden automatically. Any restart simply redraws this filtered state.

Step-by-Step Resolution

Step 1: Reopen and Pin the DM Permanently

To prevent Slack from ever auto-closing a conversation with a frequent collaborator:

  1. Press Ctrl + K (Windows) or Cmd + K (Mac).
  2. Type the display name or username of the colleague and press Enter.
  3. Once the conversation opens, find their name in the left sidebar under Direct messages.
  4. Right-click their name and select Move conversation > Starred.
  5. Starred conversations remain permanently locked to your sidebar regardless of inactivity, app updates, or system restarts.
  6. If you use custom sidebar sections (e.g., “Project Leads” or “Daily Team”), drag the conversation directly into that custom folder. If custom sections fail to sync across your other devices, see Fix: Slack “Sidebar” Folders not syncing across Devices.

Step 2: Adjust Sidebar Display Settings

If you prefer to see your recent DMs at all times instead of having Slack hide them:

  1. Click your profile picture in the sidebar and select Preferences (or press Ctrl + , / Cmd + ,).
  2. Click Sidebar in the left navigation.
  3. Under Show…, select All conversations instead of Unread messages only.
  4. Scroll down to the Direct messages section and verify your display volume is set to show all recent conversations rather than capping the list at a low threshold.

Step 3: Rule Out Message Retention and Account Deactivation

If searching for the user in Step 1 returns a completely blank message history or shows “Account Deactivated”:

  • Account Deactivation: If the user left the organization or their identity provider account was removed, Slack collapses their DM thread into an archived state. You must explicitly search their name to view historical messages.
  • Retention Purges: If your company enforces an automated message deletion schedule (such as removing direct messages after 30 or 90 days), the underlying messages may have been purged by compliance policy. When all messages in a conversation are deleted by system rules, the empty conversation shell collapses. This automated cleanup functions similarly to the schedule-based unpinning outlined in How to Resolve: Slack “Pinned Emails” Unpinning themselves.

Step 4: Repair Local Client Data Corruption

If your sidebar settings reset themselves, drop starred items, or fail to save newly opened conversations after every single application restart, the desktop client’s local IndexedDB database file is likely locked or corrupted.

  1. In Slack, select Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart.
  2. If the problem continues, follow the manual database cleanup steps in Troubleshooting: Slack “Local Data Corruption” repair guide.
